Pilgrims, a game that came out in 2019, is a bit of an interesting Point and Click game. Firstly, it is unique in the sense that you don’t really click that much in the environment of the game in order to progress – you choose between different cards in your ‘inventory’. The game itself has no voicelines (except for Sims-like blabber), and expressions is done through thought or speech bubbles.
The uniqueness of the gameplay does not hinder the experience. It is a very charming folklike adventure story, albeit very short clocking in at under an hour. You start out playing as the vagrant, crawling out of your tent. Progressing through the story you get to play as different characters who each has their own problem for the player to solve.
Although the story is quickly played through, it still is a good take on the old fairy tale genre, with fun takes on the different tropes. The idea of using cards to perform actions, although intuitive and easy to understand, does shorten the game down significally due to the limited guessing one has to do. A positive is that the game can be played by people of any ages.
The story is, as mentioned, split up into different substories – one for each character. We meet four characters besides our main vagrant. We meet a crone, a devil, a robber and a princess. They each have their unique problem that needs to be solved. This leads you on an adventure throughout the map with different hot spots to visit and with different characters to meet.
Pilgrims is a nice stylized game. Everything is hand painted with a distinct art style which really fits the fairy tale folklore-ish vibe. It is cartoony, fun to look at, and rather cute. The music within the game is equally fitting, entertaining at times and works wonders. It is diverse, depending on where on the map you are and what is happening around you.
All in all Pilgrims is a nice little game, certainly worth a playthrough. It rings in with an ‘Overwhelmly Positive’ review score on Steam, and for good reason!
